A vintage bride needs perfect vintage make-up and styling. Fact. Enter Lipstick & Curls.
Amanda Moorhouse’s vintage hair and beauty company will come to you on your big day to transform you into the best version of your vintage self. Amanda has over 15 years’ experience in her field, and a team of 15 vintage styling experts, so you’re in great hands.
My first stop on my adventures around the Lipstick & Curls website was the blog, which features how to get the look for several vintage styles. I headed straight for Gatsby to get my fix because I’ve not been able to as yet see the film! There are loads of pictures showing the look, ‘how-tos’ on things like the wavy hair, and an overview on how ladies looked in general during this era, so you’re really spoilt for choice and inspiration. And that’s just one look. I can totally imagine being a bride-to-be all over again and getting excited about sourcing a look from the past.
Lipstick & Curls’s Facebook page is also brilliant. Regularly updated, it’ll pop up in your news feed with a blast from the past memory or a great look to inspire you for the day. The photo albums section on there is another brilliant resource for brides, or anyone, looking for visuals to get the brain ticking over in terms of vintage looks.
I asked Amanda about her business and about the couple in the real wedding featured in this post:
WOW: Clio is stunning with her Deco look. Did she come to you with a preconceived idea, or did you work together to come up with the perfect look for her?
L&C: We worked together on her wedding’s Art Deco style. When she came to me first, she had already chosen both her dress and her hair adornment, so she had a strong idea of the decade and the feel of the style that she wanted to achieve. We actually had two trial sessions in the run up to her wedding, where we did both an up style and a down style. We preferred the more sculpted up style that we finally achieved with a selection of hair pieces.
WOW: What do you do when a bride has an idea that you know just wouldn’t suit her?
L&C: Honestly, I have never had that situation, and I hope that I’m never faced with such a dilemma! I think within a decade and a style there are lots of options to experiment with. It’s a case of taking elements from that decade and applying the styling to suit your own style and features. I would never do a style that I really thought wouldn’t work. However, I would make sure I had a lot of other options and suggestions to work with until we were both very happy.
WOW: Do you style the men, too? I would guess it’s important to have the couple’s look coordinated.
L&C: I have, in my career, done a great deal of men’s grooming, and on the odd occasion I’m asked to work with a men’s style, however, the men usually waive this service for their usual style, and make more of a statement with their suit and accessories.
WOW: What inspired you to set up Lipstick & Curls?
L&C: I had worked in fashion and media for 12 years prior to establishing Lipstick & Curls. I was very interested in film, and often researched back though the archives to find inspiration for my work. With a love of all things vintage, I enjoyed the London vintage scene, and became more aware of the need for vintage glamour in our modern-day lives; the company just grew, organically. I now specialise in vintage styling, and continue to work in fashion and media. It’s great to have a focus and research back through the decades. I unearth something new every day!!!
WOW: What’s your own personal favourite era and why?
L&C: I’ve been into vintage and everything retro for some time now, probably around 18 years. It all started for me when I was a student. Wearing vintage clothes was an affordable way of stepping outside of mainstream fashion trends and finding my own image. Clothes were incredibly cheap, and there was a joy in finding classic items. I have a real love of the 1950s. This is reflected in my image and nearly everything that surrounds me at home! I also love the strong styling from the 1920s and ’30s. I find not only beauty items but most objects in general from these periods were so desirable!

I really, really want to be a Lipstick & Curls girl! Even if just for one day. Might have to book me an appointment!
