I hope you’ve been enjoying the wedding disco playlists each week. It’s been making me so nostalgic!! Each song that was my contribution to this gargantuan list has its own little story to tell me and remind me of, and I’m loving listening to it once again, remembering each little snapshot its a part of. And the ones that weren’t my choice – such as the ones Mr B chose, or the ones that came back with the RSVPs because we asked our guests to choose a song as well as a meal option – are wonderful ways of seeing an extra part of the people I love. I know why some songs were chosen, and where I don’t, it’s nice to wonder why, to imagine what the emotional connection might be. I love insights like this.
- The Killers: Smile Like You Mean It
- Nirvana: Breed
- Depeche Mode: Enjoy the Silence
- Tears for Fears: Head Over Heels
- Nena: 99 Luftballons
- The Primitives: Crash
- Manic Street Preachers: Umbrella (Rihanna cover)
- Korn: Here to Stay
- Pulp: Pink Glove
- The Charlatans: Then
Without a doubt, it’s Pink Glove by Pulp. That whole album, His ‘n’ Hers, transports me back to a carefree place, all awkward sixth form gangliness and long summers with nothing to do, garish make-up from Boots, dresses like Courtney Love would wear, maybe, if she shopped at Topshop, reading The Bell Jar instead of my English set texts, knowing full well I’d pass the real exams when the time came, mocks are for squares… Total freedom.
You’d better watch what you’re wearing,
If you want him to come round and see you tonight.
He doesn’t care what it looks like,
Just as long as it’s pink and it’s tight.
It’s what he likes…
