When Patti met Shaun, she tells me she literally fell for him: he dropped her on the dance floor while trying to impress her during a very random night out in the Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club in London!
It obviously impressed because they were married on May 9th, 2014, at Convocation House (part of the Bodleian Library) in Oxford, and their day is full of classically beautiful details so fitting for the grandeur of their venues. From the bold colours of the flowers and the groom’s velvet suit, to the elegance and softness of the bride’s silky dress, I love every bit of this wedding.
We fell in love with the stunning architecture, the amazing ceiling in particular. It felt grand and unique and the perfect size for our small, intimate wedding. We really liked the rich history behind it. The fact it had featured in the Harry Potter movies was certainly a bonus to Shaun!
The reception that followed was held at the Randolph Hotel in Oxford city centre.
Having a special meal around one big table for our wedding breakfast with our dearest was very important to us, and we were able to do that in the beautiful Lancaster Room. It fitted perfectly with the style of the Bodleian Library – it has a very grand, old feel to it, like something out of Downton Abbey! Its amazing service and spectacular food made our reception and stay very special.
After our wedding reception, we headed out with our guests for an unforgettable night on the town. We let our hair down on the dance floor ’til the wee hours!
It was a beautiful surprise! Shaun proposed at the South Bank Christmas Market in London one Sunday in December. We were enjoying the busy market and festive atmosphere when he whipped out a Christmas cracker and asked me to pull it. Hidden inside was a ring and a note (it was not a joke!) saying: Will you marry me? He went down on one knee and the rest is history!
The DIY, the Details
Shaun designed our wedding invitation based around an old-fashioned library card, which tied in perfectly with the Bodleian Library.
The trees we hired for the ceremony were a little too tall and threatened to set off the laser alarms in the venue. With 10 minutes to spare, some last-ditch pruning was required!
- For the brides-to-be: Never buy a wedding dress two sizes too small and don’t attempt any DIY fringe cuts six weeks before the wedding!
- For the grooms-to-be: Obvious really, but don’t leave it all until the last minute if you wish to avoid Groomzilla meltdowns!
