This wedding is super modern and as chilled and happy as they come. I love the quirky venue, and the reason they chose it. I love that some of the beautiful bits for their big day, like the bride’s dress and shoes, were bought on their world trip. And the best bit is that they had their awesome wedding rings made in an art shop in north New Zealand! It’s all just so easygoing and natural, and you can see that shine through in the pictures. The bride described their day to me as, “a no fuss wedding. Our day was about love. Love for each other, our families and our friends.”

Jurijn and Judith married on June 7th, 2014, at their favourite pub the Sluyswacht, a strikingly lopsided building on the Oude Schans, which is right next to the Amsterdam School of the Arts. Cooler venues than this would be hard to find! Not only is it a brilliantly offbeat place in which to get hitched, but they first met there and have friends who work there, so it’s doubly dear to them.

Without the Sluyswacht, we would probably never have met, so this was a very special place for us. It’s not a very regular wedding venue! But we wanted to get married there, because it’s an important place to us and our friends.

Jurijn proposed to Judith on their trip around the world. Before the trip, Jurijn followed tradition and romantically he went to Judith’s father to ask him for his daughter’s hand. Jurijn bought a ring when they were in New York and kept it in his backpack for two months. He then waited for the perfect location and the perfect time. When they reached Uganda, they enjoyed a gin and tonic while watching a savannah sunset, and there he popped the question. How perfect is that!

There are some lovely details and touches in this wedding: the couple made the balloons and garlands with friends; you can see a pizza being delivered to fuel the partying guests; and the music is extra special…

We chose the song Sky and Sand by Paul and Fritz Kalkbrenner. We fell in love with each other during the Lowlands Festival while we were watching them perform.
