Wedding cakes have come a long, long way in recent years, with everything from naked cakes to showstopping, macaron-topped, rainbow-iced, OTT creations, making it known that you don’t have to only choose a three-tiered, white-iced fruit cake. You have options.

But what if you’re undecided as to whether or not you even want a wedding cake? What then? Well, this is where Emily of Maid of Gingerbread steps in as your alternative wedding fairy godmother! She does these incredible things with biscuits – edible tea sets, robot sculptures, biscuit cake toppers, a Back to the Future biscuit DeLorean!! – all of which would look amazing as the finale to your wedding breakfast.

And Emily does do cakes, too, so you really have all the choice here!

Oh and good news: there is a discount code, further down the post, exclusively for Way Out Wedding readers when ordering from Maid of Gingerbread!

All About Maid of Gingerbread

“Maid of Gingerbread combines two of my passions: building things by hand, and baking. It all started back in 2010 when I found our traditional family gingerbread house templates (they were also used to make a house for my 5th birthday!) and began experimenting with them; at first just adapting them to make different types of buildings, but then moving on to design templates from scratch in order to make anything and everything out of gingerbread. The results (particularly my edible tea-set) went down so well that I decided to focus on it full-time, and it’s all grown from there.  My mum has always said ‘baking is a game you can eat,’ and I think that playful approach has really informed my work.

“I originally trained as a musician and studied Southeast Asian music, which I still love and continue to play in my spare time – it’s great for relieving stress and connecting with people.

“I just love coming up with original designs that make people smile. That’s always my main motivation, and I’m constantly inspired by other designer-makers from all disciplines, particularly other small businesses within the wedding industry. It’s a really exciting, creative environment to be in, and so rewarding to get to create something for the most important day of people’s lives.

“I create truly personalised cakes and biscuits for couples who want something a little bit different. I work hard to make something that’s not only delicious, but that completely fits with the rest of the big day, and lets their personalities shine through.”

What I’m Most Proud of So Far…

“Becoming a supplier to Fortnum & Mason. They were my first retail client, and it was pretty special to see my gingerbread constructions on display in the Piccadilly store before Christmas. My Easter gifts were on sale there just recently.”

My Tips For Planning Your Wedding

“Try not to be overwhelmed! It’s difficult with so much amazing inspiration around to focus on what you two really like. Once you’ve narrowed it down a bit, go with suppliers that you trust and feel really understand what you’re after, and then don’t be afraid to give them a bit of creative freedom to come up with ideas you might not have thought of – this way, you’ll end up with things that truly reflect you.”

Fun Q&A!

My design inspirations come from… everywhere and anywhere. I’m constantly finding inspiration, whether it’s architecture, tile design, floral arrangements, graphic design, book covers…

My heroes are… Lily Vanilli and Willy Wonka.

My company name is Maid of Gingerbread because… I love a good pun, almost as much as I love baking!

I set it up because… not everyone wants a traditional cake.

I shouldn’t have a favourite range or product, but it’s totally got to be… my edible tea set. Perfect for an Alice in Wonderland vibe (or a classic English country garden tea party).
