When wedding planners wed, you’re going to see some serious style, and this is certainly true of the lovely Lisa and Sam of Carmela Weddings! They had a summery wedding in Malta (one of my favourite places on the planet!!), with tons of colour and cute 1950s details. Lisa tells me it was a three-day event, with people coming out the night before and a beach day the day after the wedding. It looks like it was major fun!!

The Story of the Wedding by Lisa

Everything took place at Ir Razzett L’Abjad, a farmhouse with a vineyard in Malta. As planners, we had so many ideas that it actually became too difficult to choose, so we decided to go to Malta instead where the choices are much smaller! I’m half Maltese and half my family is there already, so it made sense. There are some stunning locations in Malta and we’ve planned weddings in lots of them, but we’d never planned one at Ir Razzett and really saw ourselves having an intimate wedding under the vines there and a party around the pool.

We loved all of the planning, and it was a great excuse to keep going back to Malta and catching up with my family living there. As Sam is also a wedding planner, he did most of the planning and did the whole set-up the morning of the wedding.

I wore a dress designed for me by Deborah at Surrey Brides. I just couldn’t find the right dress, so Deborah drew a sketch of my perfect dress and made it! The bridesmaids wore Dorothy dresses from Kitty & Dulcie, which were an absolute bargain at £40 each! We just added the red underskirts. The groom and ushers wore trousers from Next and blazers from Moss Bross.

My sister is a graphic designer, so she designed our table numbers, all of the stationery, song lyrics dotted around the venue, etc. We didn’t spend a huge amount on any one thing.

We didn’t do anything traditional as that’s just not us, so for a first dance we asked every single person to get up and dance to Mr Brightside by The Killers. It was brilliant because it really got the party started! Even all the oldies were joining in! For walking down the aisle, we chose Falling Slowly from the film Once. It is a perfect song!

A favourite moment of the day? There are so many! We wrote the ceremony and our friend delivered it, so that was amazing. Looking around and seeing all of our family and friends dancing with us in the beautiful summer night was great, too.

As planners, we have lots of advice but my biggest one is to plan some things in for after the wedding/honeymoon to look forward to! We see it so many times with our couples – they spend so much time planning this one day, then afterwards feel at a loss and a bit down when it’s over. Get some stuff in the diary!
