Today, one of Way Out Wedding’s recommended make-up artists (MUA), Amy Pike, brings you some amazing tips for how to choose one for your wedding day. On a day where you want to be your very best and most glamorous self, navigating the myriad looks open to you can seem like a daunting task. I’ve got a whole board of make-up looks on Pinterest, and I know it’s easy to get carried away and end up with no direction or focus and feel even more confused than when you began…
So, this is why I’ve brought in the expert to help advise and guide you! Over to Amy…
The Make-up Artist Checklist – Tips for choosing and making the most out of the right MUA for your big day!
So, you’ve finally decided to tie the knot – the venue is booked, your wedding hairstyle has been practised to perfection, the cake is in production, and the wedding dress of your dreams is on its way to the seamstress for those final adjustments.
Next on the agenda: finding a MUA who will not only take care of your morning preparation woes, but will also make you look like nothing less than a goddess on one of the most important days of your life!
1. CHOOSING YOUR ARTIST
Picking the right make-up artist for you can be simple if you know what to look for. Choose an artist who values your day and is willing to go the extra mile to make sure that your look is as you want it. It’s not a sin to want to look your very best on your wedding day!
Ask plenty of questions, and make sure you’re specific if you know what you want. For example, sending the MUA lots of images of make-up you love is a great way of narrowing down what you don’t want on your face.
And never be afraid to ask for more photos of your artist’s work.
If you’re a little unsure in the make-up department, feel free to ask for advice. Your ideal MUA will be able to give you tips and provide some insight into what will look good for you. You should be able to trust your MUA. And f it just isn’t working for you, have no fear: there are plenty more artists to choose from.
2. EXPECTATION VS REALITY
Remember that your MUA is only human, not a miracle worker. Producing a glossy magazine print-out of an industry model with a full face of make-up and copious amounts of PhotoShop used in the image is bound to result in a let-down, unless you are literally Kim Kardashian. Please try to be realistic about your make-over and try to remember that although you might not look like Kim, you are beautiful, even without the help. The MUA is there to enhance your natural beauty!
3. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Depending on where you’ve decided to get married, you might choose to book a MUA local to you. Check out reviews and pictures online, and ask your married friends who they went with for the big day.
If you’re getting married further afield, it makes sense to find a MUA within a reasonable distance to the venue. Go native and extend your search to find someone who can provide you with the experience that you want. This also works for hair stylists, too!
If you truly are set on your dream MUA, despite tying the knot further away, be prepared to pay out on travel fees and accommodation.
4. BOOK A TRIAL OR TWO
In the best case, you may find you’re absolutely spoilt for choice! Book some trials and have a good ole natter with the MUAs about your makeover. You may choose to have your make-up done in the hotel, at a salon, at the venue, or even in the family home. Shop around – there’s nothing tying you to an artist until you’ve signed that booking form!
5. Consider other extras as part of the service
Does the MUA do falsies? Lash extensions? Mini-facials? Ask them at your trial and you might find that you could save some money here by having the one person do it all!
Bearing these tips in mind should make your planning run as smoothly as possible. The most important piece of advice I can impart is to ask your MUA a million questions. After all, you’ll hopefully only do this once!
